Tomatoes in Bloom

Members of our summer garden crew harvested a few onions, carrots, and the last of the beets today. They also pruned and tied tomatoes, which are growing extremely fast!

Much to our surprise, when we harvested the beets this morning, we found a tomato plant that must have grown from seeds deposited from last year's tomatoes. We also found one growing out of the irrigation spout in the same planter. These tomatoes were transplanted to a space in the planter where they can grow freely. We aren't sure what type of tomatoes they are, but several of us are secretly hoping they are Pink Lady Cherries.

Thanks to a generous donation of 21 plants by Mrs. Jean Olson of Fayette County, we have several varieties of heirloom tomatoes this year. These include Arkansas Travelers, Bart's Beefstakes,  Early Girls, and Cherokee Purple. We also have a few varieties that were provided by The Kitchen Community that were "Chef's Choice". We will not be sure what type of tomatoes these are until they produce. We do know that one of these is a cherry tomato, as we harvest our first two tomatoes this morning.

Our Early Girl tomatoes have a few green tomatoes that should be ready in about a week, while our Beefstakes and Cherokee Purples have lots of blooms ready to become sweet tomatoes!
